Genesis No. 11: Corruption Behind the “Iron Curtain”

How Scarcity and “Blat” Replaced Money

In the 20th-century totalitarian regimes, corruption didn’t disappear—it mutated. It became hidden but pervasive, splitting society into “ordinary people” and “the elite.”

The Phenomenon of "Blat" and Connections

When money lost its meaning due to total scarcity, connections became the new currency. The ability to “get” a product through a shop’s back door or access better healthcare was a form of everyday corruption.

The Nomenclature's Golden Cage

The party elite created a parallel world: special rations, private resorts, and personal drivers. While officially preaching equality, the system legalized privileges for loyal officials.

Corruption as a Survival Tactic

To meet state quotas, factory directors were forced to use bribes and shadow schemes. The system itself compelled people to break the law just to keep things running.

Genesis Conclusion:

A system without a free market and transparency doesn’t eliminate corruption; it makes it a matter of life and death. Totalitarian corruption created a chasm between slogans and reality, which ultimately collapsed these regimes from within.
